Multilayer Tablet Technology, VERSATAB
Controlled-release tablets are oral dosage forms whereby the active is released over an extended period of time upon ingestion. This allows a decrease in the dosing frequency and a reduction in peak plasma concentrations, thereby improving patient compliance. Due to low manufacturing costs and their easy application, tablets continue to be a preferred dosage form for controlled-release applications. Conventional single layered tablets have been traditionally used to deliver active molecules into the blood stream. However, these conventional single layered tablets present less than optimal delivery characteristics such as non-linear delivery profiles of the active ingredients, which can potentially lead to higher side effects. IntelGenx has developed a multilayered technology which eliminates most of the unwanted properties of the single layered tablet and offers wide-ranging flexibility.
Characteristics of IntelGenx Multilayer Tablet:
- Possibility of one, two or three layers in one tablet
- Up to three active(s) with independent release profiles
- Potential linearization of the release profile using, for example, one active in the matrix core and two external erodible placebo layers
- Possibility of enteric protection (no release under acidic condition e.g. in the stomach)
- Modular release rate and duration for each layer
- Cost-effective manufacturing
Advantages of IntelGenx VERSATAB
- Linearization of the release profile
- Multiple drug delivery format
- Can avoid chemical incompatibility if more than one active
- Suitable for a wide range of API solubility
- Improved patient compliance by reducing tablet intake
- IntelGenx patented technology
